
There is great deal of interest in the most effective methods of training (and learning) Motivational Interviewing. Current research suggests that the most effective approaches include a combination of traditional workshops followed by extended coaching and clinical supervision, often employing tools to “code” clinical encounters as a means of identifying practitioner strengths and areas for improvement.
The process of learning MI has been described as having eight stages.
